EASY YELLOW TURMERIC RICE RECIPE

There is something exotic about turmeric rice. With just the addition of a couple of ingredients, you can take your plain, boring, basmati rice, and turn it into a flavorful backdrop for some delicious recipes. This Easy Yellow Turmeric Rice Recipe is a recipe I keep going back to over and over again.

A bowl of yellow rice.

WHAT IS YELLOW TURMERIC RICE?

Yellow rice is found in local cuisines in countries like India, Spain, Cuba, Indonesia, and South Africa. Some places favor using saffron to get the yellow color, however, given the cost of saffron, turmeric is used more often. Turmeric also gives the rice a little bit bolder and peppery taste.

WHAT DOES THIS YELLOW RICE TASTE LIKE?

This rice recipe is incredibly flavorful and savory. In my opinion, too much turmeric in foods can make them taste a little pungent. This rice doesn’t get that way since it is cooked in chicken broth. The flavors from the broth and the garlic really balance out the turmeric. When you are cooking this recipe it may smell pretty strong like turmeric, but trust me, it gets toned down once you mix in the broth.

  • Butter – 3 tablespoons
  • Basmati rice – 1 cup
  • Garlic, minced – 1 teaspoon
  • Ground turmeric – 1 teaspoon
  • Chicken broth – 2 cups
  • Kosher salt – 1/2 teaspoon

  2. Add rice and stir until slightly browned.
  3. Add garlic, onion powder, and turmeric, and mix well.
  4. Stir in broth, salt, and pepper.

CAN YOU MAKE TURMERIC RICE AHEAD OF TIME?

This easy, flavorful rice recipe can be made in advance. I love to use it for meal prepping. Even when you store rice covered in the refrigerator, it tends to feel a bit hard when you take it out and it’s still cold. No worries, after a quick microwave reheating the consistency will be normal again.

CAN YOU FREEZE YELLOW TURMERIC RICE?

I don’t like to freeze rice, it is best at its freshest. That doesn’t mean you are not allowed to, so don’t get upset with me! If you do freeze rice, make sure you put it in a freezer bag, it has the habit of absorbing the “freezer smell” and then starts to taste like it. Worse than freezer burn!

WHAT TO SERVE WITH YELLOW RICE?

This is a very versatile recipe! Turmeric rice can be served with all sorts of dishes. I would not hesitate to serve it with Sheet Pan Italian Seasoned Chicken and Vegetables or as a side to the Cajun Sheet Pan Shrimp Bake.

The Sheet Pan Caprese Chicken and Vegetables is another delicious option. Pair it with a well-seasoned chicken breast, and you’ve got yourself a delicious, easy meal.
